March 29, 2022 – Long Live Mortal Kombat by bestselling author David L. Craddock is now funding on Kickstarter with a goal of $10,000. The crowdfunding campaign's launch comes ahead of the 30th anniversary of the original Mortal Kombat, released in arcades in October 1992.
Written as a trilogy, each volume of Craddock's Long Live Mortal Kombat trilogy chronicles the development of the franchise over several eras. At over 200,000 words, the first book recounts the origin story of the franchise and the careers of co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias through the release of 1997's Mortal Kombat 4, the final installment developed for arcade hardware.
Additionally, Long Live Mortal Kombat: Round 1 takes readers inside Acclaim Entertainment to discover how its marketing team masterminded the "Mortal Monday" campaign that brought Midway's hit arcade game to the living room and drove millions in sales. Other chapters feature breakdowns of each arcade title's gameplay, commentary from leading experts regarding the ongoing debate surrounding violent video games, and personal stories from lifelong fans who recount how Mortal Kombat has shaped their lives for the better.
"Since its debut 30 years ago, Mortal Kombat has sold over 73 million units," said Long Live Mortal Kombat author David L. Craddock. "It's the bestselling fighting game franchise in the world and a pillar of popular. For the first time, its complete history will be told in the Long Live MK books."
Long Live Mortal Kombat has received early praise from designers such as Gears of War and Unreal creator Cliff Bleszinski, who described it as an "utterly comprehensive" deep dive "into the behind-the-scenes details of how this cultural phenomenon" was made. Q*BERT co-designer and programmer Warren Davis agreed, calling it "very enjoyable and heavily researched."
Reyan Ali, author of the critically acclaimed NBA Jam history published by Boss Fight Books, said Craddock's "passion and commitment to detail pop off the page" in this "bloodstained love letter to an unforgettable era in gaming history." Prolific voice actor Jamieson K. Price agreed, saying that Long Live Mortal Kombat "puts you in the room with the creators and players who breathed life into the most iconic fighting game of them all."
Long Live Mortal Kombat: Round 1 is funding now on Kickstarter and will be available in digital, paperback, and hardcover formats, as well as a special collector's edition in 2022.
