Son en Bruegel, Netherlands — (February 2022): Kabouter Games announces the launch of an Indiegogo campaign for Villains Next Door, a book full of fully-realized villains ready for Fifth Edition or any fantasy roleplaying game.
Every story needs a villain. Villains create conflict. Conflict creates the call to action every story needs. Without a villain, there's no story!
Veteran RPG designer R. P. Davis of Kabouter Games gathered a diverse international team of talented designers to create literally dozens of vile, callous, wretched people to oppose your table’s player characters.
“We wanted our villains to be just regular people,” says Davis. “Our villains aren’t supervillains; they’re the kind of people who live in your neighborhood. Just normal, everyday people who happen to have a gaping, pitiless void where their heart and conscience should be.”
The Villains Next Door creative team contains people from all walks of life and “levels” of tabletop roleplaying game experience. “I couldn’t be happier with our team,” Davis notes. “When we started recruiting, our first priority was diversity. One of our overriding goals is amplifying traditionally under-represented voices. And they’ve cranked out some truly awful characters.”
Released under the Fifth Edition OGL, each villain has an associated stat block. Moreover, each villain has been carefully examined by sensitivity consultant Helen Gould. If a content warning is needed, it’s given at the top of each villain entry. “Fun, safe fun, is top of our design criteria,” says Davis. “Villains can be really awful, scary, and triggering. We made sure to provide GMs and readers with tools to recognize troubling material in the book.”
Gamers can get a PDF copy of Villains Next Door for only €10 via the Villains Next Door Indiegogo. A €20 pledge offers gamers both digital and hard copies which print and ship via industry veterans
DriveThruRPG.com. Finally, a €50 pledge nets both books and an Executive Producer credit in the text.
The Indiegogo campaign lasts until March 2nd, and Kabouter Games expects the books to be ready for shipment by mid-June.
