Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
The OUYA is almost here. The first Open Source console. We have a chance to make a real change here. OUYA, is that chance. Read on to find out more and why you should drop Steam/XBOXLive and others to develop exclusively for the OUYA at least for a year
Many indie developers dream with having their games featured on the XBOX Live marketplace or Steam thinking they will become rich overnight and they are probably right. Steam, GoG.com, XBOX Live, the AppStore, Google play and the recently Windows 8 store are a goldmine for independent game developers and if you can, you SHOULD get your game on each one of those.
But what about the future? It will be always like this for us Indie devs? Are we going to spend the rest of our lives begging to some account manager to at least see the goddamn trailer? Can you imagine how it feels to invest entire months of your life working on a game just to get one of those generic rejection emails from hell?
“Sorry, but your game is now what we are looking for right now. Maybe next time. Be well.”
The horror. You know what? We have a chance to make a real change here. OUYA, is that chance. Read on to find out more and why you should drop Steam/XBOXLive and others to develop exclusively for the OUYA at least for a year.
Some of you know their Kickstarter project page so I won't get into what the OUYA is in much detail but I will tell you this: up to this day OUYA has earned the small amount of $8,596,474. Amazing, isn’t it? The first open source console is here and people can't wait to play some cool games in it. That's a new market. We are lucky ones. How many times you get to publish your game into a new console people is so desperately to buy they even put money upfront to have it built? That's right: we are seeing history in the making here folks, but somehow people is not fully aware yet. Specially indies.
The goldmine is open and most of my indie friends do nothing but keeping hopes on their Steam Greenlight submission.
Stop for a second. Can you smell that? That’s the smell of freedom. Opportunity. Money. Change. That’s our own echo in the wind and it only costs $99 buckazoids. That’s OUYA, only you were distracted with Greenlight. That's the beautiful smell of the first open source console to hit the market and the best of all: OUYA loves independent developers.
Do you want to develop for the AppStore? $99 bucks per year for the SDK, plus, get a Mac to work with because it only runs on OSX. Are you planning on going with the XBOX market? Don’t even ask me about XBOX, I will spare you the horrors. What's that? Do you want Nintendo? What are you, nuts? They want you to have at LEAST 10 people working for your company before they can even start talking to you. They don’t even know what indie devs are. I’m pretty sure they will go ninja on you if you even try to knock that door. Forget it. Go back to PC and Steam.
No. NOT ANYMORE.
We now have OUYA SDK! Go ahead, download and instal the official OUYA Dev Kit (follow this link)
Cost: $0.00!
You only need to get the console, which is around $99 bucks and that’s it! You can use the free SDK to make games right into your OUYA console! You don't need anual subscriptions! Just the console you are going to play with anyway!
Entirely built on Android, OUYA is getting ready to kill the competition and you can already see why: with OUYA you don’t need to buy one of those “fridges SDK boxes” like the ones Sony or Nintendo likes to scare developers with.
See for yourself:
Why You Need to Drop Steam/XBOXLive and Develop for the OUYA
I introduce you to the Nintendo dev kit. Looks like something that came out of an ambulance.
Why You Need to Drop Steam/XBOXLive and Develop for the OUYA
Now this little box, is the OUYA. Sexy. Small. It does the job, and it loves android.
Why You Need to Drop Steam/XBOXLive and Develop for the OUYA
Are you ready? Okay. Here it goes: “submit and publish apps to our game store in the same way Android app submission happens today.”
You can’t beat that offer. Not even Steam can beat thats offer. Yes I know, they said they are going to make an android console, but you know what? You will end up in line again and that’s okay, that’s their way to handle games submissions and we love them, but in the meanwhile, while you are in line to see if your game gets accepted by Steam or GOG or XBOX or any other online store, check out OUYA and help them make a difference.
Oh, and become filthy rich because EVERYONE is getting their OUYA and those first in line with their games will get the golden opportunity to have their games be the "face" of a gaming console. Only a couple of times in a lifetime folks. This is one.
