Talking in a new media interview, Shaun Himmerick of NetherRealm Studios has claimed that the developer has a PlayStation Portable 2 in-house. Sony has yet to officially announce the successor to their PSP handheld console. Himmerick, executive producer on the forthcoming Mortal Kombat reboot at the studio, was speaking to IndustryGamers about the potential of handheld versions of Mortal Kombat. He said: "We have a PSP2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support." "Always a big thing for us is the performance," he continued. "We're running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We're definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it's a pretty powerful machine. We don't have a 3DS system in-house yet, but we're looking to get one, and we'll certainly look at what its power is." Rumors about the new handheld have been circulating for several months. Analysts were expecting Sony to announce a 2011 release date for the reportedly touchscreen handheld console at E3 this year, but the company has yet to officially confirm its existence. Sony’s Michael Denny, when asked about the handheld in August, stated that the firm didn’t have "anything to announce" but is always "looking at the future as well."
