Following the closure of one of its browser-based MMOs, developer Jagex has laid off a number of its staff, according to media reports. The studio confirmed the closure of MMO 8Realms to Gamasutra, stating, "During the 8Realms beta it has become clear that the game doesn't meet our high expectations for success and we are therefore channelling our focus on other exciting opportunities in the pipeline." It declined to comment on layoff reports, however. UK industry site Develop reports that the MMO closure has led to layoffs, while some staff have been moved to other positions in the company.
