Angry Birds developer Rovio today announced the acquisition of Futuremark Games Studio, the gaming division of benchmarking software company Futuremark, which has previously released games such as Unstoppable Gorg and Shattered Horizon. Rovio said that the move will help support the company's "larger expansion plan," on the heels of its success with Angry Birds Space, which saw over 10 million downloads in the space of three days after launch. Futuremark's CEO Jukka Makinen said that his company will now be focusing on its 3DMark benchmarking tools, with a new release later this year that will "allow unified gaming performance comparison across operating systems and form factors for the first time." Gamasutra has contacted Rovio to ask whether Futuremark Games will remain a separate entity, and how much was paid for the company. This is Rovio's second acquisition in the last 12 months, as it previously bought collaborative Finnish animation studio Kombo last year.
