Call of Duty still on top -- during Black Friday, anyway

And Sony's doing a good job of staying on top, even with a massive Microsoft deal creating inroads for the system.

Marketing research firm InfoScout has released a list of the most popular Black Friday games and finds that Call of Duty: Black Ops III rode to the top and captured over 9 percent of console game sales -- boosted, in part, by discounts on Walmart.com.

This news comes despite suggestions that the franchise sales have slowed this year.

InfoScout captured its data from analyzing the receipts of 250,000 shoppers.

The most popular console bundle during the period was a $299 Xbox One bundle sold by Target, that came with Gears of War and a $60 gift card. But VentureBeat was able to tease more information out of the company and found that despite that sales coup, the PlayStation rose in popularity in the 18-35 age group on Black Friday -- to 48 percent. Older shoppers favored Microsoft, but also saw a boost for PlayStation products that saw Sony edge out Nintendo for the number-two spot among that group.

For insight into what games consumers are buying at retail this holiday season, you can see InfoScout's full Black Friday software sales chart below, and head to its blog for more data on what got sold.
