Yesterday Monument Valley developer Ustwo took to Twitter to share a stark but not unusual stat: The premium-priced mobile hit saw piracy rates nearing 95 percent on Android.
That won't cause the company to change its strategy moving forward, however, says Monument Valley producer Dan Gray in a new Q&A with Re/code.
Besides clarifying that a small number of these free installs include players who own multiple devices -- and are thus legitimate -- he also pointed out an important thing about the regionality of the data.
While 40 percent of installs on iOS were paid and only 5 percent on Android, "Let’s say you take U.S. only: Those paid rates for Android and iOS are actually considerably closer. They’re closer than five and 40 percent," Gray said.
He also said that while other developers go premium on iOS and free-to-play on Android, many Android owners "really resent being treated like second-class citizens" and that the studio will continue to release premium games on the platform.
