It's that time of year again: Apple has named its top apps of 2014, recognizing Threes and Monument Valley as the best iPhone and best iPad games of the year (respectively). This is less than surprising in light of the fact that both games won Apple Design Awards over the summer, but it's a nice nod for both Ustwo Games (which recently suffered a remarkable volume of complaints over its decision to sell Monument Valley DLC) and Threes co-creators Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend, who saw their game endlessly cloned and recloned after its February release. Fellow Apple Design Award 2014 winner Leo's Fortune from Swedish developer 1337 & Senri was recognized as the Game of the Year Runner-Up. As we wrap up the year that was, it's also interesting to note that games held the top two slots in Apple's Top Paid Apps of 2014 chart (Heads Up! and Minecraft: Pocket Edition) and the top three slots in the Top Grossing Apps of 2014 chart (Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga and Game of War: Fire Age).
