World Of Warcraft Players Raise $1.9M For Japanese Earthquake Relief

Blizzard has revealed that World of Warcraft players donated over $1.9 million to support the ongoing earthquake relief efforts in Japan, through in-game purchases of a specific pet. For every $10 Cenarion Hatchling pet bought, 100 percent of the fee was donated to assist victims of the earthquake. The pet was made available at the beginning of May, and donations could be made until July 31. Over 190,000 purchases of the pet were made during this time. In a post on the World of Warcraft website, a statement from Blizzard said, "The community responded by opening up their hearts and wallets wide. Thanks again for your support and for helping to make an impact on the lives of those affected by these events." A number of other video game publishers have raised money for the Japanese relief efforts over the last few months. EA raised more than $1 million through various campaigns in its games and efforts by its internal and partner studios. PlayStation Network users also donated over ¥129.7 million ($1.65 million), while the likes of Sega, Capcom and Nintendo gave money to the cause.
