'Open and inexpensive' Android home console Ouya detailed - report

The concept for an open, accessible Android OS games console has been drawn up by a number of industry veterans, with the team currently looking to have the idea funded. The Ouya, as it is called in its AngelList entry, is described as an "open and inexpensive" console aimed at allowing any developer to publish games for the home console market. The console aims to be inexpensive for both developers and consumers, costing $99 for both the console and the dev kit. All the games will be free-to-play, and the console itself will be "built to be hacked", allows devs to build their own peripherals and root the system. The project was founded by Julie Uhrman, IGN's former head of digital distribution, while the console itself has been designed by Yves Behar, founder of industrial design company Fuseproject and COO of headset tech studio Jawbone. Other advisors to the project include former Microsoft executive Ed Fries and former Photobucket VP Peter Pham. Behar said on the AngelList page for the project, "I believe in disruptive companies and products that reshape industries. Ouya is an open game console and platform, that allows people to build, play and share on the TV the games they are passionate about." He added, "This 'maker' phenomenon that has swept so many industries is missing in gaming, and Ouya is out to change that." Gamasutra has contacted the Ouya team for confirmation.
