Blizzard has further demonstrated its commitment to eSports with the formation of the Overwatch League.

As the name suggests, the Overwatch League will revolve around the studio's hit hero-shooter, Overwatch, which currently has over 20 million players.

The league has been established with a focus on sustainability and accessibility, with Blizzard explaining it wants to give people the chance to establish "the types of professional careers associated with traditional sports."

The inaugural Overwatch League will kick off in 2017. During pre-season Blizzard will begin searching for talent by inviting distinguished players to try out for regional teams.

Anyone who makes the grade will then be offered a contract that includes a baseline minimum salary and benefits package.

"The Overwatch League represents not only the pinnacle of Overwatch competition, but also a genuine career opportunity for the most skilled Overwatch players,” said Blizzard CEO, Mike Morhaime.

"We’re building a league that’s accessible to players and fans, sustainable, and exciting for everyone involved."
