A new report from analysis firm Xyologic predicts that by June 2012, the number of apps downloaded monthly for Android devices will have surpassed the number downloaded for iOS devices. Currently, the App Store sees more than double the number of downloads that the Android Market and other Android download services see, with 1.45 billion apps downloaded for iOS devices in August compared to 640 million downloads for Android devices. However, in an new Apple vs Android report, and as reported by business site Venturebeat, Xyologic estimates that both devices will see roughly 3.2 billion downloads each by June next year, with Android devices just ahead. Monthly Android app downloads will then continue to increase more rapidly than download for iOS devices. The company also predicts that the total number of Android apps downloaded will catch up with and surpass the total number of iOS downloads by mid-2013, with around 84 billion downloads for both. As of now, iOS downloads stand at 18.2 billion in total, while Android downloads are at 6.76 billion. Elsewhere, the report estimates that the total number of apps available for Android devices will surpass the App Store mid-2012, at the point when each has around 680,000 apps available. Current totals stand at 466,000 for iOS, and 289,000 for Android. Xyologic co-founder Matthaus Krzykowski explained, "Apple continues to grow at exponential rates, but Android is growing at hyper-exponential rates." "In the coming months, we’ll see a number of countries where Android becomes No. 1."
