Browser-based PlayStation Store goes live

Sony has finally launched a web version of its PlayStation Store, allowing PlayStation 3 and PS Vita users to view, and purchase game titles outside of PlayStation consoles for the first time. Up to this point, PlayStation users could only check the online store via their PS3 or PS Vita. With the opening of the web browser-based Sony Entertainment Network Store, it's now possible to access every part of the PS Store from a web browser. Items purchased via the browser-based version of the store are added to the top of the user's Purchase History, and can then be accessed and downloaded on the corresponding PlayStation device. Note that the online store is currently rolling out in different regions, and the U.S. version of the store isn't yet available. Fred Dutton, blog manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, noted, "we are testing a new web store, which we look forward to announcing and launching to the PlayStation/Sony community shortly." With this latest move, Sony's online store can now be accessed in a similar way to Microsoft's own Xbox Live online store, as well as the iOS App Store and Google Play for Android. However, the browser-based Sony store does not have the ability to automatically add a game to a console's download list and set it running, as with the Xbox Live store.
