Osaka-based Capcom said Wednesday that February's Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds has shipped 2 million units worldwide, 11 years after the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Capcom said in a statement that the mash-up fighting game capitalized "on the resurgence of the fighting game boom that began last year." The game debuted on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 15 in North America. The title came out in Japan on February 17 and Europe on February 18. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 had a strong debut in the U.S. in February, with combined sales of both versions of the game topping console retail sales charts for the month. Capcom said it will release downloadable content for the game, such as new characters and costumes, which the company hopes will extend the game's appeal as well as sales. The original Marvel vs. Capcom launched in 1999, taking characters from Marvel comic book universes and pitting them against famous Capcom video game characters. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 launched in 2000 and relaunched as a digitally-distributed game on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network in 2009.
