Newsbrief: Cross-platform, open-source game engine Cocos2d-x is staking its claim as one of the leading toolsets for 2D video games, with top studios like Disney Mobile and Wooga utilizing the engine. Cocos2d-x developers can build their 2D game in C++, and then publish it easily across multiple mobile platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry. The engine has now been downloaded more than 300,000 since release in 2010, and is used by companies like Gree, Konami, Zynga, Gamevil and DeNA. It's particularly popular in China, where the project originated -- currently, seven of the top 10 grossing games on iPhone in the Chinese App Store are built using the engine.
