The 2016 Game Developers Conference is coming up quick, and today organizers are happy to announce the details of the Day of the Devs and iam8bit interactive spaces at the March conference.
Spoiler: There's a photo opp involved.
Would you believe that the very first Game Developers Conference was conducted in a dumpy 80's living room? Well, it was - so believe it! And in the stubborn instance that you refute such a story, the magicians of nostalgic arts, iam8bit, will make you regret your pitiful attempt at instilling doubt. They'll do so by way of their most audacious GDC installation to date, putting all previous collaborations to embarrassing, tearful shame.
Their homage to those early days of the conference will henceforth be known as "I WANT MY GDC!!" - featuring oodles of consoles, collectibles and other game-centric accoutrement, collaged together into a fever dream of button-mashing, keyboard-smashing nirvana. In other words, it'll be a really cool Photo Playset that looks like a retro living room. It will be bigger and better than the "Class of GDC" photo opp iam8bit brought to GDC 2013 (see class photo of Double Fine's Tim Schafer, above.) So come get your snapshot taken!
But wait, there's more. Four years ago, Double Fine & iam8bit Twister'd together to create a gathering of gamemakers and the people that play the games those makers make. After a terribly long brainstorm, the soiree was named Day of the Devs - and quickly grew into a rather charming collection of so-called games made by self-proclaimed "independents."
While their political affiliations are disputable, what's for certain is that Day of the Devs is always carefully curated set of games that inherently possess the highly coveted qualities of: Personality, Curiosity, Visuality and Really Good Hair. That's exactly what you'll find at the GDC 2016 Day of the Devs interactive space, where you can canoodle with 12 super-cool games in an area conveniently located adjacent to the terrifyingly long escalators -- not far from the iam8bit space!
These events and more should offer attendees plenty of stuff to stop and check out between sessions. Stay tuned for more announcements about the show in the weeks ahead, and don't miss the opportunity to save money now by registering for the conference early -- the deadline to register for passes at a discounted rate is Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016.
GDC 2016 itself will take place March 14-18th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. For more information on GDC 2016, visit the show's official website, or subscribe to regular updates via Facebook, Twitter, or RSS.
Gamasutra and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Tech.
