While the iOS App Store is still maintaining a strong lead over the Google Play Android store in terms of game revenue, "astonishing growth" in Asian markets is helping Google Play close the gap more rapidly. According to data from App Annie, revenue from iOS App Store game sales was 2.3 times that of the Google Play store during the first quarter of 2013. However, Google is gaining on iOS, as iOS game revenues were around 3 times as much as Google Play revenues in the fourth quarter of 2012. Google Play game revenues doubled from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013. A good portion of this rapid growth is down to Google Play game sales in both Japan and South Korea. Game revenues nearly tripled in Japan quarter-over-quarter, and Japan is now by far the top grossing country for Google Play game sales. And South Korea saw its Google Play game revenues double quarter-over-quarter, securing Asia as the region with by far the greatest amount of growth for Google Play. In comparison, the U.S. still drives the most game revenue for iOS, although it's notable that revenue from China ramped up quarter-over-quarter too.
