Google will soon introduce subscription promotions to help its developers drive engagement and boost revenue.

Subscriptions can be implemented in a variety of ways, with some game devs using the model to give players access to entire game collections for a monthly annual fee.

The new feature will give those using subscriptions the ability to offer cheap introductory rates in a bid to expand their audience.

Google Play's head of apps business development, Larissa Fontaine, said subscriptions are the fastest growing business model on the Play store, and indicated consumer spending in subscription apps has increased tenfold over the past three years.

"Coming soon, you'll be able to create an introductory price for new subscribers for a set period of time. For example, you can offer a subscription for $1 per month for the first three months before the normal subscription price kicks in," wrote Fontaine on the Android dev blog.

"Along with local and custom pricing, and the free trials already offered, introductory pricing will help you acquire more subscribers and grow your subscription business."
