Seattle-based Polyarc Games announced this week that it's raised $3.5 million in a recent Series A round of funding, and it plans to use that cash to build "virtual reality games that are both accessible and appealing to a wide audience."
What makes this notable is not so much the amount invested as who the money is being invested in.
Polyarc was founded last year by former Bungie devs Tam Armstrong and Danny Bulla (with Chris Alderson departing Bungie to join them shortly thereafter.) Each of them (pictured) has significant game industry experience before they worked together on Bungie's online shooter Destiny, and Armstrong and Bulla say they got their start in VR development by serving as consultants to Oculus.
"From the moment we first saw VR prototypes our minds have been racing with the possibilities for intuitive interaction in games," Armstrong stated in a press release announcing the funding round.
However, it sounds like the studio is still very early in development, as Polyarc intends to release its first game in the fourth quarter of 2017.
