With iOS 7 Apple is introducing two new features that will build a new market in customer acquisition.

Apps updating in the background automatically is a problem made famous by John McCain but surely felt by anyone who's had i-devices for more than a year. In the next version of iOS they're going to update automatically when you're not using them including I believe partially based on usage habits, eg apps you typically use in the morning will update at night. That's exciting.

At the same time Apple is belatedly allowing developers to transfer apps to other developers which creates significant potential for marketplaces to sell apps that fail for addressable reasons or couldn't maintain whatever popularity they had.

Together these form a powerful combination of being able to buy games that have stalled then automatically push updates to everyone while reducing the game to free and as a marketing campaign for games with proven revenue tactics.

The rising cost of customer acquisition through advertising and growing restrictions on in-app promotions are going to transform this new functionality into a tremendous opportunity for developers to make money, and consumers will win at least temporarily as quality apps become completely free just to build up traffic in the hope of selling it later.
