Apple once again posted dramatically increased revenues and profits for its latest fiscal quarter, as sales continue to skyrocket for both the iPhone and iPad. For the second fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2012, Apple saw $39.2 billion in revenue and $11.6 billion in profit, compared to revenue of $24.7 billion and profit of $6.0 billion during the same quarter last year. These figures were largely influenced by the iPhone, which sold 35.1 million units, an 88 percent increase compared to this period last year. This recent quarter also marked the launch of Apple's latest iPad, and while its performance fell below analyst expectations, the platform's sales still increased 151 percent to 11.8 million units. Just like in previous quarters, these incredible sales will indirectly benefit the iOS development community, as the continually growing install base will provide an even larger audience for new games and apps. During its quarterly earnings call, Apple confirmed that sales of iOS-embedded devices have since surpassed 365 million units. Outside of its iPhone and iPad sales, Apple noted that it sold 4 million Macs during the quarter, roughly 7 percent more than it sold year over year. The iPod line (which includes the iPod Touch), on the other hand, saw sales decline by 15 percent to 7.7 million units sold. "Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter, we expect revenue of about $34 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $8.68," said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer.
