Longtime Lionhead creative director Gary Carr has left the company after twelve years working on games like Fable: The Journey and The Movies. GameSpot has the report, and the belief that Carr's goal is to start his own independent studio.

Carr's departure is significant; he was a key figure at Lionhead and its progenitor, Bullfrog Productions, working with Peter Molyneux (who also left Lionhead 3 years ago to found 22Cans) on multiple projects at both studios.

Carr had most recently been leading up Lionhead Incubation, the company's skunkworks for prototyping fresh game ideas and driving innovation at the studio.

"We can confirm that Gary Carr, who played a lead role in Fable: The Journey, Milo & Kate, and The Movies, is no longer at Lionhead Studios," a Microsoft representative told GameSpot. "Gary has been a great friend and colleague during his tenure at Lionhead, and we appreciate his contributions to the team. We remain focused on the development of Fable Legends."

Fable Legends is, of course, the multiplayer free-to-play game that Lionhead chief John Needham pointed to last year as evidence that he could and would turn Lionhead into a "games-as-service" studio.
