A study conducted by Dr. John Porcari from the University of Wisconsin concluded that the Nintendo Wii fitness title EA Sports Active met aerobic workout guidelines set by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), establishing the title as an effective form of exercise. The results indicated that the Electronic Arts-published EA Sports Active and its expansion title EA Sports Active: More Workouts "can improve aerobic capacity and favorably affect body composition when used on a regular basis as part of a healthy, active lifestyle." The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest international sports medicine organization, and is a leading authority on exercise science. The ACSM's study challenged 16 physically active adults between the ages of 25 and 45 to complete the "Afterburner" and "Legs & Lungs" workout routines in EA Sports Active, to determine exercise intensity and caloric expenditure. Both workouts met the ACSM's guidelines for physical fitness, which recommend that individuals "exercise at an intensity between 64 per cent and 94 per cent of their maximum heart rate or 40 per cent to 85 per cent of their maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), as well as burn a minimum of 200-300 calories per session, five days per week, in order to maintain proper health and to aid in weight control." "Our mission is to promote and integrate scientific research, education and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science," said Jim Whitehead, President and CEO, ACSM. "We develop guidelines to promote healthy living and are glad to see that EA Sports Active meets those guidelines for an effective workout."
