Mobile players: 24% drop off after one session, 78% after one month

Mobile games are definitely where the heat is right now: companies are promising massive revenues. But retention continues to be an issue.

Mobile analytics firm Appsee has conducted a study using its tool that suggests pretty miserable long-term retention rates for mobile games. In fact, even short-term retention isn't that great, the firm reveals in its new blog post.

Almost 24 percent of players drop off after one session with a game; at the end of one month, only 22 percent of players remain.

The company puts this down to four potential reasons: Poor traffic sources, a poor onboarding experience, expectations for what the game would be like not being met, and the competition in the app stores.

On the flipside, research firm Fiksu recently pointed out that the cost of user acquisition on mobile is is going up -- leaping to $1.32 per user on iOS.
