VR company Oculus never expected its Rift headsets to garner this much popularity. As a result, the company has now said that the first version of the developer kit will soon be unavailable. This is mainly down to the fact that certain components used in the dev kit are no longer being manufactured, said Oculus community manager Andres Hernandez in a Reddit post. "As a result, we don't have the necessary materials to produce additional kits," he explained. "We still have some stock available, but we're quickly running out. We are looking into alternate sources for the needed components, and we don't yet have a timeline for when additional units will be available." With the first run of developer kits coming to a close, and sales of the kit essentially suspended once the current stock runs out, there's now speculation from the Oculus community as to when the mark 2 dev kits will drop. Oculus will no doubt be keen to get more kits into the hands of developers, especially before the consumer unit finally launches to the public sometime in the near future. Right now Hernandez says that over 50,000 dev kits are in the hands of developers. And the company will of course be looking to put some of that recent $75 million in funding into DK2, the next dev kit for the Oculus.
