We're just over a week away from the Game Developers Conference 2014, and today we're highlighting even more sessions for the Main Conference that you'll want to check out. We're pleased to announce that the perennially popular Rant Apocalypse and GDC Microtalks are returning to GDC 2014. In addition, we're excited to share more details on Ryan Payton's talk about the design challenges Camouflaj faced while developing Republique. Now in its 28th year, GDC is the world's largest and longest-running professionals-only game industry event, and will once again take place at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California during March 17-21, 2014.

Rant Apocalypse: 10th anniversary extravaganza

The popular GDC rant session turns ten this year, and organizers Jason Della Rocca and Eric Zimmerman are celebrating by bringing back the best ranters from years past. Rant Apocalypse: The 10th Anniversary Mega Session will feature Brenda Romero, Clint Hocking, Heather Chaplin, Ian Bogost and more, plus a slew of surprises and some good-natured shouting. Cutting through the clutter of polite industry chit-chat, the rant session takes on the issues that matter to developers in a no-holds-barred format. Of course, the rant session is about identifying solutions as well as problems. Topics will address issues of concrete importance to the game industry. Expect impassioned diatribes, cutting critiques and burning-hot manifestos.

Designing the “one touch” gameplay of Republique

Ryan Payton recently wrapped a two-year journey to build Republique, a one-touch stealth game for mobile, and now he’s coming to GDC 2014 to talk about how his team pulled it off. During his talk, 500 Nights of Failure: Designing Republique’s “One Touch” Gameplay, Payton will walk attendees through the creative process of designing “one touch” gameplay while candidly discussing the many misfires and failures that threatened to derail the project along the way. Payton hopes to help fellow developers circumvent critical design challenges, and inspire designers to "Keep Hope Alive" by not giving up on their vision, no matter how grim things may get. For more details on what went right -- and wrong -- during the development of Republique, check out the Payton-penned postmortem published on Gamasutra.

GDC Microtalks: Ten speakers in one action-packed hour

Also, don’t miss GDC Microtalks 2014: One Hour, Ten Speakers, a Panoply of Game Thinking! Every year, ten speakers from across the world of games and play are drawn together during GDC by curator and MC Richard Lemarchand to give ten short talks inside of a single hour about their philosophies, their view of our past, present and possible futures, and anything else that they're burning to discuss. The session has a game-like constraint: each speaker gets twenty slides, each of which is displayed for sixteen seconds before automatically advancing, giving each speaker exactly five minutes and twenty seconds to tell us what's on their minds. It’s a fun, stimulating session gives some of your favorite GDC speakers a chance to speak about things they might not otherwise discuss on stage at GDC, and introduces you to some fresh faces.
