The numbers are in: Activision said Friday that day-one sell-through of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 hit $500 million worldwide. So we all knew Black Ops 2 would be a commercial smash, but the question is how it's stacking up so far, compared to previous Call of Duty games over recent years? Here's how day-one figures stack up:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009): $310 million (North America, UK)
Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010): $360 million (North America, UK)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011): $400 million (North America, UK)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012): $500 million (Worldwide) Black Ops II launched on November 13 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. A Wii U version is launching with Nintendo's new console this weekend. This latest round of muscle-flexing comes days after Microsoft announced that Halo 4 -- only available on one console, Xbox 360 -- reached $220 million in day-one sales, though Microsoft did not specify if that figure was sell-through to consumers or sell-in to retailers. Activision said the Black Ops 2 sales figures come from Chart-Track, retail customer sell-through information and internal estimates. While CEO Bobby Kotick was happy to toot his company's horn, he added, "Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013." In other words, the world economy kind of stinks right now, so let's not get our hopes up too high for the next 13 months.
