Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
"If we can make a game we're proud of, [and] it pays for itself and allows us to make another game -- we’re very happy." - Garry Newman, maker of Garry's Mod.
"If we can make a game we're proud of, [and] it pays for itself and allows us to make another game -- we're very happy."
- Garry Newman, maker of Garry's Mod, in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun With around 3.5 million units sold and over $22 million in sales since launching in 2004, Garry Newman and Facepunch Studios' sandbox game Garry's Mod is one of the biggest indie success stories around. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Newman tried to take some reasonable guesses as to how he might've reached that level of success, ranging from Steam Sale discounts to the rising popularity of streaming videos via Twitch. Even with GMod's financial success, Newman said it's pointless to concentrate on matching that with his next game, Rust. "We decided a long time about to not give that much of a fuck about sales. We’re never going to recreate GMod's popularity -- it would be stupid to try," he told RPS. You can check out the rest of RPS' article, and also marvel at Newman's sales graphs for GMod, which he tweeted last week:
