A few days ago, Riot Games made a move to standardize penalties against teams and players participating in its League of Legends Championship Series -- it's good news, because in prior years, penalties were inconsistently applied in similar situations, something the company admits. 

It's an important step for eSports and well worth keeping an eye on if you have even a passing interest in the subject.

But what if you don't quite understand what's going on?

Some good news for you: Attorneys Jas Purewal and Pete Lewin have broken down what the rules mean at ESports Observer. 

"The Indices themselves are a quick and well-presented read and provide some excellent examples of best practice when it comes to things like player acquisition, so we’d definitely recommend giving these a read yourselves if you haven’t already," the lawyers write, before getting into the meat of the changes, including observations about some specific regulations. 

It's worth a read, as it brings the larger context of the eSports scene and the history of League of Legends to bear in the analysis:

"With a minimum 10 month suspension penalty, Riot’s policy seems in keeping with the strict approach taken by Valve (which recently handed life-time bans to several players of team iBuyPower for their involvement in match fixing)."
