The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
Gambling in the United States has always fought an uphill battle against tight regulations set by the government.
After the Gold Rush era, gambling gained momentum as an additional revenue source for growing cities, but in the early twentieth century, regulations began to tighten on the industry. With the advent of the Internet, online casinos seemed to be a new horizon for the business, but they have played their own share of legal tug-of-war in the past two decades.
By the late 1990’s, saw a huge gain in popularity. New sites were springing up overnight, and large Internet companies allowed the casino’s ad placement on their sites just like any other business. In 2002, several cases were brought to court in regards to what types of gambling the Federal Wire Act pertained to. While the Federal Wire Act, which prohibited electronic sending of sports betting information, did not specifically prohibit online casinos, many of the large ad hosting websites retracted the ability of online casinos to advertise on their sites due to the threat that their advertising may be seen as “aiding” illegal gambling. In 2006 the online casino industry was struck another blow by the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which made it illegal for banks to transact with online gambling sites.
Several years and many court cases later, New Jersey became the first state to pass legislation that legalized online gambling in some forms. Nevada quickly followed suit, declaring online gambling sites legal within the state. Since then, many other states have taken steps towards allowing online gambling, and the online casino industry has seen another rise in popularity among patrons of the inter-web. While some regulations still restrict the online casino industry, such as restrictions dealing with transactions between gamblers in different states, the national legislature seems to be handing the matter over to the states. In the coming years it is predicted that the online casino industry will see loosening regulations and a growth in the number of sites hosting gambling. These online sites also now have to find alternative advertising routes, but their audience continues to grow at an incredible speed.
One site that dealt with the legality battle facing online casinos and came out on top of the competition was 888casino. After having to leave the online casino market following the 2006 court decision, the company was able to make a comeback in May 2013 after the Nevada Gaming Commission gave 888casino an Interactive Gaming Service Provider license. This allowed the company to provide online gambling in the US—the first company to be able to do so. In a 2012 article for PokerNews, 888 CEO Brian Mattingley indicated the company’s plans to expand as soon as the legality issues clear up. “We are currently in the process of a license application to operate in Nevada, which we are hopeful of receiving in time for us to launch as soon as the legalization of online gaming is confirmed,” Mattingley said.
Online Casinos play host to many classic casino games such as poker, bingo and slots, and can be a fun way to pass time and even earn some extra cash. Many people have even found that online gambling has allowed them to pursue careers in the gaming field. As the online casino market expands, http://us.888casino.com ;continues to move ahead of its competition in more ways than one.
