The Job Hunt for an Entry Level position

This is just a blog of what I have been doing in preparation for a position in the industry.

So this is my first blog here on the site so I have decided to make this one pretty meaty. I graduated from Full Sail University in 2012 receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Game Design. So approximately a whole year has gone by since my graduation and I am still unemployed. During that time I have been teaching myself how to program using UDK and Unity, but in most cases I never find out how to do what it is I want to do within those engines.

The routine usually goes as follows, do a draft, outline, storyboard  the idea as well as putting all these things together in one big design document. I have done this several times since graduation. Problem is, when I get to the prototyping stage, due to my lack of programming skills, I can't make my idea work, which in turn becomes wasted time and another project that won't go into my portfolio.

I have read a few articles about game design, after graduating, about why people shouldn't go to school for Game Design, which is also pretty discouraging since. However, my passion pushes me forward to continue to try to learn the things i need to learn to get in the door. I will say, I had a easier time finding a job without a degree than I do with one. So here I am today still pushing forward with no sign of light at the end of the tunnel.

This is by far the hardest industry to get into. I would urge anyone trying to get into this industry to go to school for anything other than game design, as I have found out I am limited in what I can do with a degree in the subject. If you do go to school for Game Design make sure that the programming courses are extensive so that you don't paint yourself in the corner as I am. I sacrificed a lot to pursue a carreer in this industry, 3 1/2 years of school and 1 year of nothing afterwards, I honetly at this point feel that it was a mistake.

I will keep on pushing, something has got to give.
