Playing with Fear is an upcoming documentary on the history of the horror genre of video games. It's currently seeking a bit of funding -- and in the meantime, the filmmakers have produced this video above, a succinct visual summary of the history of horror games. Beginning with early classics like Splatterhouse and Maniac Mansion, contemporary mainstays like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, as well as new outsider hits like Year Walk and Slender, it's an interesting overview of the visual and auditory motifs of a genre through over three decades of evolution, popularity, and innovation. A quick word of warning: though the video is well-produced, a lot of the content is graphically violent and also contains some imagery of sexual assault and self-mutilation. View with discretion.
