Steam creators Valve have announced that the IGF Award winning music/puzzle game Audiosurf was the top selling game on the digital download service in February, topping Orange Box, Counter-Strike and hundreds more. The "music-adapting puzzle racer" has players using their own music files to create racing courses with its pace and shape determined by the tempo of the song, over which is played a colored-block puzzle game. Valve notes that solo developer Dylan Fitterer originally conceived of the design as Tune Racer, a game released as part of his BestGameEver.com venture, where he released a new title every Friday. The game was nominated for Technical Excellence and Excellence in Audio in the 2008 Independent Game Festival Awards, where it took home the Audio prize. The game was released on Steam in early February and included the entire Orange Box soundtrack. Said Valve busines development director Jason Holtman, "The critics are calling Audiosurf one of the most innovative music games ever released. Sales of the title and the buzz across the Steam Community pages support those claims. This kind of runaway success for an independent title is a tribute to Dylan's work and millions of informed gamers connecting via Steam each week."
