Multiplayer mod Project Reality, a significant reworking of DICE's Battlefield 2, has been named 2008 Mod of the Year by notable mod coverage site Mod DB. The site's 7th Annual Mod of the Year Awards gave out ten main honors to seven games, along with a slate of runners up for the main award, drawing from a field of 150 "high-profile releases." Project Reality aims to create more realistic gameplay and equipment using the core engine and dynamics of team-based shooter Battlefield 2, as well as increasing the necessity of cooperation. In addition to Mod of the Year, Project Reality was recognized as Best Multiplayer Mod. TaleWorlds' action-RPG Mount & Blade was also honored twice, taking Indie Game of the Year as well as the Editors Choice award for Best Indie Game. "The momentum that has built up behind modding and the Mod of the Year Awards is amazing," said event organizer Scott Reismanis, founder of Mod DB. "The quality of nominations for our annual event continues to rise. We're proud to be hosting an event that recognizes the great works of such gifted talents and spotlights an art form that is positively influencing the video games industry." The full list of award winners is as follows: Editors Choice awards: • Most Innovative Multiplayer: Celestial Impact • Best Original Art Direction: Delta Sector • Best Upcoming Mod: Curse • Best Upcoming Indie Game: Zeno Clash • Best Indie Game: Mount & Blade • Best Singleplayer Mod: The Ball • Best Multiplayer Mod: Project Reality Players Choice awards: • Best Upcoming Mod: Dead before Dawn • Indie Game of the Year: Mount & Blade • Mod of the Year: Project Reality A total of 115,000 gamers and developers voted for the main award and two other Players Choice awards -- up 35,000 from last year's participation figures, according to Mod DB.
