Final Fantasy Back On Top In Japanese Charts

Square Enix has secured yet another number one in Japan with a Final Fantasy title, following the success of Final Fantasy Tactics on PSP in May and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on PSP in September. This week’s number one debut is by Final Fantasy Tactics A2, a sequel to 2003’s Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on the Game Boy Advance. A spin-off from the main series, rather than a direct sequel to the PS one original, the game’s sales are very similar to the PSP remake, with 142,000 units sold for A2, compared to 154,891 units for Final Fantasy Tactics. Despite a large number of new releases this week, overall sales are still somewhat low - although a significant improvement on last week’s disappointing results. The second-highest new entry of the week is role-playing game sequel Ar Tonelico II for the PlayStation 2 with a creditable 72,000 units sold. By the third place in the charts, though, sales begin to look less healthy with Konami’s World Soccer Winning Eleven DS (aka Pro Evolution Soccer 2008) registering only 29,000 units sold. Sega and ChunSoft’s survival horror Imabikisou on PlayStation 3 meanwhile entered the charts at number four with 23,000 units sold. Anime license Code Geass on Nintendo DS enters at number six with 20,000 units sold, while Sega’s arcade light gun conversion Ghost Squad debuts at number seven with around 20,000 units sold on the Wii. The final new entry in the top ten is God of War II for the PlayStation 2 at number eight. The Western developed game is published by Capcom in Japan, rather than Sony, and sold 17,000 units. It fared significantly better than Capcom’s well-received Treasure Island Z: Barbaros' Treasure (aka Zack & Wiki) for the Wii, though, which debuted at just twenty-nine in the charts.
