Gamasutra sister publication Game Developer magazine has announced a win in the WPA's 2010 Maggie Awards -- the prestigious Western U.S. magazine awards -- in the best technical/training-related magazine category. The publication came away with the award for Best Computer Software, Training & Program Development Award for its December 2009 issue, which features a postmortem of Double Fine's heavy metal-heavy video game Brutal Legend. Game Developer magazine publisher Simon Carless joked of the win: "Clearly, the presence of both Lemmy and Ozzy Osbourne in the issue were the things that tipped the WPA's awarding committee over the edge." He added: "Twinned with cutting-edge articles on the business (tax rebates for game developers) and art (creating believable 3D characters, from a co-creator of Silent Hill) of making games, as well as many other in-depth columns and reviews, we think the issue was representative of the quality we continue to offer to the game creation community." The Western Publications Association (WPA), the creator of the Maggie Awards, is a non-profit association working to advance the business of print and online magazines in the western United States. The association has been operating for more than 50 years, and some of the other victors in this year's Maggie Awards include notable names like Mother Jones, Emmy, and Reason magazine. Carless concluded: "We'd particularly like to thank Game Developer EIC Brandon Sheffield and fellow magazine stalwart Jeff Fleming. It's heartening that we continue to pick up awards such as this for the quality of the writing and overall style of the publication. Kudos also to Cliff Scorso and particularly Joe Mitch for their art direction of the magazine, as well as production (Pete Scibilia), sales (the whole team, headed by Aaron Murawski) and marketing (Mellisa Andrade and colleagues) for their hard work." Game Developer magazine continues to publish exclusive content, the biggest game postmortems, and in-depth industry columns monthly -- more information is available at its official website, with physical and digital subscription options available now.
