Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4 on PlayStation 3 has enjoyed a spectacular opening week of sales in Japan, with the title selling close to half a million copies on its debut. The 465,000 unit figure is very similar to that enjoyed by the openings of previous major entries in the franchise, despite the PlayStation 3 having a relatively small userbase in Japan. With the release of the game in Europe reportedly having little effect on hardware sales, all eyes will be on the weekly hardware figures released tomorrow and the game’s continued performance in subsequent weeks. Previous number one Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit on PlayStation 3 has not held up well in its second week, for example, with just 17,000 unit sales at number eight. However, sales across the top ten are dwarfed by the release of Konami’s new title, with second placed Mario Kart Wii selling only 38,000 units. There is only one other new entry in the top ten this week, another in D3 Publisher’s series of Pachinko/Pachi-slot simulations featuring anime license Evangelion. The new Nintendo DS iteration sold 22,000 units at number six. There only two other new entries in the rest of the top thirty, with Marvelous’ new cookery edutainment title Majin Tantei Nougame Neuro: Neuro to Miko no Bishoku Sanmai at number twenty-one on Nintendo DS and IE Institute’s English language training tool Motto TOEIC Test DS Training on Nintendo DS at number twenty-three.
