Hi-Rez Studios is bringing a 100-player Battle Royale mode to its free to play, Early Access hero shooter Paladins in the form of Paladins: Battlegrounds.

Paladins looks to be the latest game to adopt a Battle Royale mode following the massive success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds last year and, by naming the mode itself Battlegrounds, Hi-Rez isn't exactly being shy about its inspirations.

Similar to PUBG, Paladins: Battlegrounds will drop 100 players onto a large map with a steadily decreasing play area where they’ll have to scavenge for gear and fight to be the last player standing.

Paladins' take will keep the main game’s varied cast of characters however, essentially merging the hero-based shooter and Battle Royale genres into one.

Of course, Paladins is far from the first game to step into the Battle Royale ring following the success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Epic Games’ Fortnite notably adopted a free-to-play Battle Royale mode that attracted 1 million players on its first day live last September. Since, Crytek’s Warface has also introduced its own free-to-play Battle Royale mode as well.
