Seaman 2 Tops Slow Japanese Software Chart

Sega’s Seaman 2 has gained the dubious owner of undercutting Halo 3 as the slowest-selling Japanese number one of the year, in a chart that features a number of other notable entries, including Beautiful Katamari on Xbox 360.

Software sales in Japan have continued to underperform this week, despite a new number one in the form of surreal pet simulator Seaman 2 from Sega. The PlayStation 2 game becomes the lowest selling number one in Japan by a considerable margin, undercutting Halo 3 by 26,000 units with a total of just 33,000. Although September and October are not traditionally busy retail periods in Japan, this year’s seasonal low has dipped further than usual, with few major releases for either the Nintendo DS or Wii to stimulate demand. Technically, the best selling game of the week was again Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2, with a combined 35,000 units sold. However, splitting the game into two different SKUs has, as usual, cost it the top spot. The second-highest new entry of the week is an interactive collection of Japanese novels and poems on the DS, with a title that translates simply as DS Literature Collection. It enters the charts at number two with 32,000 units sold. Also new this week is the Xbox 360 version of Beautiful Katamari at number seven, with 19,000 units sold. The final new entry at number ten translates as Racehorse Owner Life Game: Winners Circle with 15,000 units sold on Nintendo DS.
