The release of Activision’s Spider-Man 3 has predictably entered straight in at number one in the UK sales charts, where it is likely to become one of the summer’s biggest sellers. One unexpected element of the game’s success is that the Xbox 360 version of the game accounted for 45 percent of sales, compared to 40 percent for the PlayStation 2 (plus 10 percent for Wii, 4 percent for DS and 1 percent for PC). Although the PlayStation 3 version of Spider-Man 3 is yet to be released, this may mark the tipping point in the UK for multiformat games, with next generation titles accounting for the majority of sales over the previous generations. In second place, Wii Play has risen two places to number two, the result of improved hardware availability for the Wii console. In doing so, Sony’s God of War II is knocked down two places to number three, after having performed better than its predecessor in the UK, but still far behind the success enjoyed in North America. There are no other new entries in the top ten, although EA Sports titles FIFA 07 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 have risen back up the charts as a result of new retail promotions. Casual gamer friendly trivia game Buzz! The Mega Quiz has also seen a rise of ten places, after an initially disappointing debut. Elsewhere in the top forty, the delayed European release of Final Fantasy III has seen the game debut at number eleven. There are no other new entries but instead a number of re-entries -- again due to retail promotions -- at the bottom end of the top forty, including games such as Cars, The Sims 2: Pets, Need for Speed: Carbon and Test Drive Unlimited.
