Capcom's Street Fighter IV has shipped a total 2 million copies worldwide so far, the company says, as it celebrates the revitalization of its classic 2D fighter series. The title saw its arcade release in Japan in July, and released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 just last week in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. It's the first non spin-off entry in the series in 11 years, and has already proven a critical hit with reviewers and a chart-topper in the West. The release of the newest game has also seen Mad Catz’s supporting range of controllers suffer unexpected supply constraints. Although the original Street Fighter in 1987 received little acclaim, its sequel, Street Fighter II in 1991 revolutionized the fighting game and re-emphasized the importance of multiplayer in modern action games. The series as a whole has since sold over half a million coin-op machines and 27 million console games. The franchise's 20th anniversary project is continuing in Japan, with events such as the Street Fighter IV National Tournament. In a statement, Capcom was also keen to emphasize its “single content multiple usage” strategy that has seen the development of the upcoming Hollywood movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
