Publisher Acclaim Games has announced that its free-to-play online robot fighting game BOTS!! has reached 1 million registered players and a celebratory Million Players Event coming May 2-7th. Part of Acclaim's resurrection as a publisher announced in February of last year, BOTS!! is a massively multiplayer custom robot battler for up to eight players. Capitalizing on the MMO model popularized in the Korean game sphere, the game is free to play, and supported by both ads and an in-game mall where users can purchase upgrades to their fighters. To celebrate the millionth registered member, the publisher is holding a 'BOTS 1 Million Players Event' from May 2nd-7th, with players competing for prizes and points, double the 'bonus coins' given for any Acclaim Coins purchase (used to buy in-game robot upgrades), and a special new Dark Axe, giving players a higher drop rate for better items. "One million players says it all, our fans want multiplayer social games using the free to play model," said Acclaim Games CEO Howard Marks, who recently expounded on Acclaim's plans to bring the model to the West in a Gamasutra interview.
