Game developer Aspyr Media (Stubbs The Zombie, Dreamfall) announced the creation of a new Macintosh-specific digital download application called The Gamerhood, which will allow users to purchase and download Aspyr's PC games directly to their Mac. The service, which looks to behave in a fashion not unlike Valve's popular PC digital content delivery system Steam, will offer a variety of games, from casual titles to more mainstream releases. Of the features confirmed for the upcoming service, which will allow Mac users to download and play games digitally, without any requisite CD/DVD media inserted, some include the ability to check user compatibility by comparing a machine's hardware against a game's minimum system requirements prior to purchase, alert users to current Aspyr projects and new games, and inform users of any product updates as they become available. The Gamerhood will also allow users to organize their downloaded titles into a personal catalog, and will also allow parents to restrict gameplay and online game store material based on ESRB ratings. Downloading The Gamerhood will be free to all Mac users. Over the next few months, Aspyr will release more specific information on The Gamerhood's capabilities and a list of titles, which will be immediately available upon the application's launch in the fall.
