ATI Unveils Next Generation Graphics Processors

ATI is taking its graphics processor technology to the next step with the introduction of its next generation Radeon processors. The new Radeon graphics processor family consists of three products, the Radeon 8500, the Radeon 7500 and the Fire GL 8800. The new cards have has technological advancements including Truform, a rendering technology that helps to deliver smoother, natural 3D images; and Smartshader, an technology that utilizes Microsoft DirectX 8.1 API to enable more complex and realistic texture and lighting effects, including supporting Pixel Shaders Version 1.4. The Radeon 8500 is pitched as the ultimate gaming graphics card with 64MB of DDR memory, digital flat panel support as well as dual monitor and video output, and DVD video playback. The Radeon 7500 is targeted at mainstream consumers with dual-monitor support and integrated TV-out. The Fire GL 8800 is targeted as a mid-range 3D graphics board for CAD/CAM and the modeling and animation aspects of digital content and creation. The Radeon 8500 will retail for $399, the Radeon 7500 for $199, with both cards being available in September. No pricing available on the Fire GL 8800, but ATI says it will be out in October.
