Discreet announced character studio 4 today, which the company is demonstrating at Siggraph this week. Enhancements in version 4 include:

  • A non-linear animation mixer that blends multiple motion files, and helps blend of motion capture with key-framed animation.

    • A "time warp" feature to help control changing animation timings, like increasing or decreasing motion speeds.

    • An "animation analyzer" for correcting discontinuities by analyzing animated limbs.

    • An "animation fixer" that suggests fixes and has a "most likely resolution" mode which lets the system tweak the data in a way that maintains tangencies and provides smoother character motions.

    • The ability to view quaternion rotations as function curves, which combines smooth quaternion rotations with the easy control capabilities of function curves. character studio 4 will ship this Fall, but no firm date nor pricing information was provided.
