Gamasutra is proud to present GDCTV, a continuing special feature showcasing streaming high-quality video content of some of the notable sessions of this year's Game Developers Conference. For this session we have the Deputy Project Director for the America's Army Project, Chris Chambers, lending his insight and the lessons learned in working on the project in "How We Morphed Beyond our Original Mission: Lessons Learned Integrating America's Army into Traditional Simulation Infrastructure & Programs", as follows: "America's Army has remained a popular end-user application since its inception several years ago. Primarily tasked for public visualization of the U.S. Army from Basic Training to Special Forces, the project garnered so much attention from other areas of the Army and DoD communities that it quickly became a starting point for other applications including weapons testing, negotiation training, imbedded training, convoy trainer, combat robotics modelling, and more... Among the most important pieces of work has been integrating America's Army into existing DoD simulation infrastructure programs. By integrating the rich end-user environments provided by America's Army with the data systems that drive current and legacy simulation systems used within the defense community the Army Game Project is enriching their progression toward becoming a true all-purpose virtual world development platform for serious games. In this session, leaders of the Army Game Project will detail the backend infrastructure and work they've layered into the original project that has enabled it to assist other government and non-government users who want to leverage the U.S. Army's investment in the game. Since many of these steps are important to other serious game projects this now becomes an opportunity to share these steps and offer insights for other successful projects to make similar forays in their respective areas."
