Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says that Nintendo is working on a better storage solution for the Wii, but says that the solution won't necessarily be an external hard drive add-on. "I want the people to have the right expectations," says Fils-Aime in an interview with Latin America's official Nintendo magazine Club Nintendo, roughly translated by fan site Nintendo Everything. He continues, "We have never said that it will be a hard drive, nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store games." Though the Wii offers 512 MB of built-in flash memory and an option to save data onto SD cards up to 2GB, the company has been criticized for not providing a built-in or external hard drive with more storage space. Nintendo received even more criticism after the May launch of its WiiWare service, which enables users to download new games significantly larger in file size than the system's Virtual Console offerings. When previously asked about the limited storage issue, Nintendo's former Marketing VP Perrin Kaplan suggested that users simply delete their older games, as they can download them again later without charge. "If your refrigerator’s full, you’ve got to pull something out and put something else back in," said Kaplan. "That’s just the normal issue of space. I mean, really, are you using every single thing on there?" Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who was also interviewed by Club Nintendo, says that consumers should expect an announcement from the company on a possible upcoming storage solution, though he provided no timeline for that announcement.
