Nintendo’s domination of the Japanese sales charts has reached new extremes, with the top fifteen selling games all for Nintendo formats, and all but two of those published by Nintendo themselves. In what was already a busy week of sales in Japan, where the main gift giving season is traditionally a few weeks later than in the West, it was still Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker which was the best selling total overall, with the game well on its way towards a million units sold after just two weeks. Despite the volume of sales the top ten was largely static in terms of positions, with Wii Sports and Wii Play increasing in sales, thanks to greater hardware availability, to easily hang on to their second and third place spots. The Wii version of what is known in the West as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 also performed strongly in its debut at number thirteen, while WarioWare: Smooth Moves also increased its sales at number fourteen. The highest ranked PSP title in the top fifty was Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops at number sixteen, with the highest ranked PlayStation 3 title being Resistance: Fall of Man at number forty-seven. No Xbox 360 titles charted in the top fifty. Hardware sales saw the Nintendo DS sell 344,953 units in total, followed by the Wii at 195,331 units and the PSP at 118,186 units. The PlayStation 3 sold 69,944 units, the PlayStation 2 52,037 units and the Xbox 360 18,235 units. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles sold 5,732 units and the GameCube 1,258.
