Popular indie adventure title Cave Story will get a fully-fledged remake for the 3DS, publisher NIS America revealed at an event attended by Gamasutra, where creator Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya was on hand for the big announcement. Pixel originally created the game as a free PC download over five years of his spare time. It tasks a mysterious, amnesiac player character with exploring an island populated by little white rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas, who are under threat from a mysterious Doctor. Cave Story earned acclaim for its Castlevania and Metroid-influenced mechanics as well as for its surprisingly deep, imagination-provoking storyline. It's since received official WiiWare and DSi Ware releases, updates on the original version, and the 3DS version will be a complete ground-up remake in full 3D. Despite the fact that the game world and objects will now be rendered as 3D polygons -- a major visual overhaul -- the game mechanics won't change, NIS and Pixel said. The title will still be a sidescrolling adventure. According to Games Radar, Pixel also hinted at a sequel for the now widely-beloved game, saying there was a "very, very good chance" one would be made. No date was announced for the release of the game, but the 3DS releases in North America on March 27.
